Ways to carry a newborn

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

If you did not subscribe yet to the Wrap you in love videos, please do it now.

It has helped me during my first days discovering baby-wearing and boy, am I grateful to have found her. Her videos are short, yet well thought and easy to follow. You can also watch them while the baby is sleeping as she is not talking in them and this is a big game-changer.

I will make a separate post to talk about the carriers to choose for a newborn, so scroll further if you learn more about the different ways to carry a newborn in a stretchy or woven wrap.

Here is a good list of the ways to wrap a newborn. The majority of the carries are done with a woven wrap, but in the early days much of them can be done with a stretchy. Once the baby gets heavier that will not be the case anymore, but you could switch to a woven wrap. The stretchy already prepared you for the switch.

However, for beginners and those a bit afraid of wrapping and juggling a newborn (having a first baby equals to a lot of new experiences) there is another video with a better way of wrapping, which I would recommend.

(It is not the best video, as the baby is not quite a newborn anymore and she is not stretching the wrap enough, nor supporting the head, but there are many more on youtube to choose from and find the one that speaks best to you. Everyone has their own way of wrapping and you should find yours.)

The reasons why this way to wrap is better are:

1. You can wrap around yourself and tighten before taking the baby in your arms. If you have the baby in your arms and want to tighten while holding the baby this can be a bit too much.

2. You can take the baby out and leave the wrap on yourself while you feed or change the baby then put it back without a need to tighten again (just in the case you are using a stretchy).

Other ways to wrap (carries):

Kangaroo is easy to do but not as easy to tighten. In addition, the more you tighten the upper the baby goes so might need to redo the wrap job in case the baby ends up too high.

Once the baby grows older you might not find it as easy to wrap and the baby/early toddler might mess up your wrap job.

If you want to try back carries I would suggest this way of putting the baby on your back.

Like this you make sure to have a seat from the beginning and not try to lengthen your arms to reach very high up your back.
